Top 3 News of the Week: Thousands Protesting over Rempang Island Project, Pakistan Pays High Price for China Corridor

1. Thousands Protest in Front of BP Batam Office over Rempang Island Project

Thousands of indigenous Malay people from the Riau Islands held a demonstration in front of the office of the Free Trade Zone and Free Port Authority or BP Batam on Monday, September 11, 2023.

The crowd has been gathering since morning. They are not only Malay residents of Batam but also from other regions, voicing objection to the eviction of Rempang Galand Island, calling on the National Police and the Indonesian Military (TNI) to dismantle the post set up in the area and stop intimidating the residents, and demanding President Jokowi cancel the eviction plan.

2. Pakistan Pays High Price for China Corridor

The ambitious USD$60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which stretches almost 3000km from the port of Gwadar in Pakistan’s rugged southwestern province of Balochistan to Kashgar in the western Chinese region of Xinjiang, was launched 10 years ago this July.

Labelled a “game changer” by its backers, the 30-year project includes the development of Gwadar, laying gas and oil pipelines from Gwadar to China, the building of small dams and hydroelectric power stations, the upgrade and construction of roads and railroads and the development of numerous other projects, including a metro system in Lahore.
