TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - It is crucial to choose the right watermelons when you purchase them as nobody wants to eat mushy and tasteless watermelons.
Citing Healthline, below are the six tips for choosing a ripe and sweet watermelon:
1. Find a uniform watermelon
Watermelons come in various sizes and shapes. However, no matter if the watermelon is round or elongated, pick a symmetrical watermelon without bumps or cuts.
2. Feel the weight
A sweet and ripe watermelon feels heavier than it looks. Meaning, the watermelons are packed with water and will taste refreshing. Always go for a watermelon heavier than its actual size.
3. Examine the spots
Ground spots on the watermelon could be a sign of ripeness. Yellow ground spots mean the watermelon is ready to consume and white ground spots mean the watermelon is harvested too early.
4. Tap the watermelon
Tapping the watermelon will paint a picture of how dense the meat of the fruit is. If the watermelon lets out a heavy sound when tapped, it is good to be consumed. Spoiled watermelons will sound hollow when you tap them.
5. Check for the skin thickness
Checking the thickness of a watermelon's skin refers to its resilience. A ripe watermelon has thick skins, which makes it sturdy and not easily breakable when you press on the fruit
6. Examine the tail
The tail-end of a watermelon refers to the uncut part of the stem sticking to the fruit. If the uncut stem looks green, it's a sign that the watermelon was harvested too early and not ripe enough to be consumed. On the other hand, a dry stem marks the ripeness of the fruit.
