TEMPO.CO, Humamoto - Researchers are now seeking to create fruits in engineered and unusual shapes. The Special Project Development Division of Mekarsari Fruit Park, Bogor created square melons, using square 'clothing' on the young melons.
Recently, a farmer in Humamoto prefecture, Japan, engineered a heart-shaped watermelon. Hiroichi Kimura was challenged by his neighbor who once wished to eat a delicious heart-shaped watermelon from Kimura's watermelon farm.
To meet his neighbor's wish, Kimura studied all information he could get about agricultural engineering. He made heart-shape moulds to get the ideal shape, and controlled the soil condition, temperature and humidity level.
"I want my customers to taste something unique and delicious," said Kimura yesterday.
The farmer has previously failed several times before finally succeeded in creating a unique sweet crunchy texture and watery watermelon. Now, Kimura's watermelons are available in fruit shops around Humamoto.
