1. Thousands Protest in Front of BP Batam Office over Rempang Island Project
Thousands of indigenous Malay people from the Riau Islands held a demonstration in front of the office of the Free Trade Zone and Free Port Authority or BP Batam on Monday, September 11, 2023.
The crowd has been gathering since morning. They are not only Malay residents of Batam but also from other regions, voicing objection to the eviction of Rempang Galand Island, calling on the National Police and the Indonesian Military (TNI) to dismantle the post set up in the area and stop intimidating the residents, and demanding President Jokowi cancel the eviction plan.
2. Protest Against Rempang Eco-City Project Ends in Chaos; 14 People Arrested, 15 Police Injured
A mass demonstration against the relocation of the Malay villages on Rempang Island on Monday, September 11, ended in chaos. At least 14 people were arrested by the Barelang Police after the police fired tear gas to disperse the protesters.
Barelang Police Chief Sr. Comr. Nugroho Tri N said some of them are not Rempang natives, but Malay residents living off the island. A minor who claimed to be 15 years old was also arrested.
Nugroho lamented the chaos. “When there are provocateurs, they (the protesters) become anarchists like this,” he said on Monday.
3. Rempang Island Fiasco: Police Arrest 43 People After Protest in Batam Ends in Chaos
Riau Islands Police and Barelang Police arrested a total of 43 people for allegedly committing violence against officers and vandalism during a protest in front of the Batam BP Office on Monday, September 11, 2023, related to the Rempang Island fiasco.
“43 people from the mass demonstration against the relocation in front of the Batam BP Office were arrested. A total of 28 people were detained by the Barelang Police, while 15 other people were apprehended by the Riau Islands Regional Police,” Barelang Police Chief Sr. Comr. Nugroho Tri Nuryanto said in Batam on Tuesday, September 12.
Nugroho said that five of the 28 people tested positive for drugs. Three of them tested positive for the use of marijuana and two others tested positive for the use of crystal methamphetamine.
