G20 Summit: Jokowi Talks Climate Issues, Offers Investments at IKN

11 September 2023 14:14 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo or Jokowi returned from the G20 Summit in India on September 10, 2023. During his three-day visit, Jokowi paid attention to climate issues and explored further investment possibilities for the Indonesia's new capital city (IKN), Nusantara.

As president of the G20 last year, Jokowi participated in three sessions at the high-level meeting held at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi last weekend. He gave a number of speeches related to climate issues as well as the importance of multilateral cooperation amidst dynamic global conditions.

In addition to attending the main agenda of the G20 India Summit, Jokowi also held bilateral meetings with a number of state leaders. Jokowi met with United Arab Emirates President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

On the first day of the G20 Summit on Saturday, September 9, Jokowi received a French investment commitment for the capital city, Nusantara. He said that the French ambassador to Indonesia had brought potential French investors to IKN by producing a Letter of Intent to develop Nusantara. Jokowi hopes an agreement between France and Indonesia can be reached in the near future.

Jokowi also had a 20-minute meeting with Italian PM Giorgia Meloni. There is no mention of a bilateral agreement yet, but Jokowi also invited Meloni to participate in IKN development.

On the issue of climate change, the president called for real actions to protect and preserve earth. He said that developing countries like Indonesia need assistance in the field of technology and green investment in order to fast-track the reduction of emissions in the world.

Jokowi wants the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) scheme, which was agreed at the G20 Bali Summit last year, to be expanded and amplified. "Funding commitments from developed countries are still limited to rhetoric and on paper, whether it is climate funding of US$100 billion per year, or loss and damage funding facilities," he said.

Jokowi also mentioned the need for nations to stop warring. "We must stop war, adhere firmly to international law, and work together to realize inclusiveness," Jokowi said in the second session of the G20 Summit on Saturday, September 9. He did not elaborate on which war he was referring to.

Last week, prior to attending the G20 Summit, Jokowi chaired the ASEAN Summit where he emphasized that Indonesia continues to encourage the Southeast Asian bloc to become an anchor for regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
