East Nusa Tenggara Issues Emergency Alert for Drought

TEMPO.CO. Jakarta - The Regency Government of Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara issued an emergency alert for drought and forest fire caused by the effects of El Nino throughout August, from August 1 to August 31, 2023. 

The alert was provided in the Regent's Decision No. 311/ KEP/HK/2023 on July 31, 2023, and received in Kupang on Monday, August 7, 2023.

The Kupang Regent Korinus Masneno said that the alert was issued after the Regional Disaster Management Agency conducted a quick review of the drought and forest fire potentially endangering the lives and livelihood of Kupang residents. 

"To anticipate the drought, we need to establish the emergency alert in Kupang," said the regent. 

Korinus Masneno also said that after the emergency alert, the disaster response to the potential drought is conducted by an integrated team consisting of regional officials, non-governmental organizations, the military and police, and other related agencies.

According to the mapping done by the disaster management agency, four districts in Kupang are on standby level, namely  West Fatuleu District, Semau District, South Semau District, and Sulamu District. Meanwhile, six districts are on alert level, namely Nekamese District, South Amarasi District, Southwest Amfoang District, Northwest Amfoang District, and Central Amfoang District.
