TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fire swept through 5,000 square meters of grass at the end of runway 27 of Adisutjipto International Airport in Sleman, Yogyakarta, on Sunday afternoon, July 30, 2023. General Manager of state-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura (AP) I Yogyakarta, Agus Pandu Purnama, confirmed that the fire did not cause material losses.
“The incident resulted in approximately 5,000 square meters of grass at the end of runway 27 to burn completely, and there were no other material losses,” Agus said.
According to him, the blaze started at around 15:31 local time when a fire and a puff of smoke were seen outside the airport’s Perimeter fence.
“Then the fire grew as the wind blew quite strong. The fire caught dry grass in the perimeter fence area,” Agus explained.
The Airport Operation Center Head (AOCH)officer thus immediately contacted firefighters of the airport and Adisutjipto air base.
The fire was managed to be contained at around 17:00 local time after six fire engines from the Adisutjipto Airport and Air Force Base and the Sleman and Bantul Regency Fire Department were deployed.
