TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will only send one athlete, Jonathan Christie, to the finals of the badminton tournament Japan Open 2023, as two other representatives failed at the semifinals.
Jonatan Christie is to compete in the finals after defeating India on Saturday, July 29, with the scores 21-15 13-21 21-15. In the finals of BWF World Tour Super 750, Jojo will face Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen who advances to the finals after defeating Japan’s Kodai Naraoka.
Two other Indonesian representatives who failed in today’s semifinal games were Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.
Fajar / Rian lost in two games with the scores 19-21, 10-21 when facing Taiwan’s Lee Yang/Wang Chi Lin. Meanwhile, Gregoria failed to defeat Cina’s He Bing Jiao, with the scores 21-13 19-21 9-21 after 60 minutes.
Indonesia’s results in the semifinals of Japan Open 2023:
• Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto vs Lee Yang/Wang Chi-lin (Taiwan): lost 19-21, 10-21.
• Jonatan Christie vs Lakshya Sen (India): win 21-15, 13-21, 21-15.
• Gregoria Mariska Tunjung vs He Bing Jiao (China): lost 21-13, 19-21, 9-21.
Last year, Indonesia sent 13 athletes to Japan Open and no one reached the semifinals.
