TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Jakarta Social Affairs Agency on Sunday, July 16, arrested a 72-year-old beggar identified as Y during the operation of the social welfare service (PPKS). The man was carrying about Rp18 million.
“Today (Sunday) at 9 a.m., we arrest a man Y who was carrying Rp18.8 million,” said South Jakarta Social Affairs Agency head Bernard Tambunan in Jakarta, Sunday, July 16, as quoted from Antara.
The resident of Bojonegoro was found by Kebayoran Baru Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) while scavenging around the pedestrian bridge on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, Senayan, Central Jakarta.
The agency then contacted the South Jakarta administration to immediately make an arrest and take Y to Bina Insan Bangun Daya 1 shelter in Kembangan, West Jakarta.
The man admitted that he had been a beggar on the pedestrian bridge and had no place to live. He usually spent the night at Pasar Seneng mosque in Central Jakarta.
He also claimed to have a nephew residing in Tambun of Bekasi, and his wife and child in the hometown had died.
The money totaling Rp18.8 million of Rp100.000 bills was wrapped around his stomach using a cloth. “The money resulted from begging for two years, which was initially small change but had been exchanged at the bank,” Bernard explained.
The man is now at the social shelter and promised that he would not do begging after finishing training at the shelter.
In 2023, the South Jakarta Social Affairs Agency arrested at least 703 people who need social services, including beggars, as of June.
