Jakarta to Repatriate Beggars, Homeless People

4 May 2023 13:30 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Agency (Disdukcapil) Head Budi Awaluddin stated that city officials would repatriate newcomers who have no house or are homeless, beggars, and those who are inspected by the Social Welfare Service Administration (PPKS) to their region of origin.

“Yes, beggars and homeless people will be sent to their hometown,” Budi said when met at the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD) Building, on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

He said the repatriation of newcomers who fall into this group is a form of controlling population administration in the capital.

“If they don't have a place to live, don't have a job or skills, they are fighting their fate in Jakarta. If they don't have a place to live, they become homeless beggars, get ready to be disciplined,” Budi emphasized.

At least 1,228 newcomers have entered the capital after the 2023 Eid al-Fitr. The number was calculated from April 26 to May 2, 2023.

The Jakarta Disdukcapil data showed that 1,202 people are permanent migrants, while the remaining 26 are non-permanent migrants or will return to their region of origin. Of the total figure, 17.89 percent or 220 newcomers did not have a job yet; 24.54 percent or 301 people are private employees; and 24.46 percent or 300 people are students.
