TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chairman of the Indonesian Football Association Erick Thohir revealed the plan to hold a training camp for senior national team players in Turkey as one of the preparations for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup which will be started in January next year.
During the centered training period, Erick said Liga 1 2023-2024 competition will be stopped temporarily to support the Indonesia national team's preparation.
"In December, the game had been stopped starting on the 20th due to the training camp [of the Indonesian senior team] in Turkey," said Erick in a press conference at the Sports Ministry on Friday, July 7.
The State-owned Enterprises Minister explained that the training camp will be held for three weeks before competing at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Erick tapped the 2023 AFC Asian Cup as the main priority of the national team. He even set a high target for Shin Tae-yong to get the Merah Putih squad agar bisa membawa Pasukan Merah Putih berbicara banyak di tingkat Asia.
Indonesia is reportedly to be in Group D with Japan, Vietnam, and Iraq based on the draw in Doha, Qatar on May 11. Shin Tae-yong said that the chance for the national team to qualify for the Knockout Stage is about 50 percent.
"Our group is not easy. For sure, I'd say our chances of qualifying to the Knockout Stage is about 50 percent but I have a lot of confidence in my team," he said on AFC Asian Cup YouTube channel on Friday, May 12.
Nevertheless, he said facing familiar rivals like Vietnam and Japan would be a plus point for Indonesia. The Garuda squad often competes against Vietnam, while Japan was the team Shin met when coaching the South Korean team. "As long as we prepare ourselves well, I am sure we can put up a very strong performance against them."
The 2023 AFC Asian Cup is slated to be held from January 12 to February 10. In total, the are eight stadiums in four cities, namely Al Khor, Al Rayyan, Doha, and Al Wakrah, for the games.
