TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have named nine suspects following the raid of an illegal abortion clinic in Sumur Batu, Kemayoran District, Central Jakarta. Two of the suspects are actually repeat offenders of similar cases who were released last year.
One of the suspects, NA, who worked as an assistant in the clinic was convicted of his crime and had just been released in June 2022. NA rented the house used for the illegal practice from its owner, Bambang, starting April 2023.
"This assistant can be said to be the brain of this abortion clinic, because NA was the person who rented that house," Central Jakarta's Metro Police chief Sr. Comr. Komarudin said on Monday, July 3.
Komarudin said that NA (33) acted as an assistant to SM (51), who was the person in charge of the abortion procedure. SM is also a repeat offender convicted of the same crime. He was released in May 2022.
NA's other role, Komarudin continued, was to look for women seeking to abort their pregnancies. NA and SM knew each other when they worked as assistants at an illegal abortion clinic in Bekasi, a case in which they were both convicted.
NA was also arrested in Cikini, Central Jakarta, also for the same case. NA had also worked as an assistant in an illegal abortion house in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta. This case was revealed in May 2023.
In addition to NA and SM, other suspects in the Kemayoran illegal abortion case are the clinic's driver SA (30), and the housekeeper SW (42 years). The other suspects are patients JW, IR, IF, and AW. Everyone but AW had had abortions in the clinic.
According to reports, the abortion home in Kemayoran had been in operation for a month, providing services to some 50 pregnant women. They charged the women Rp2.5 million to Rp8 million per case, based on how long their pregnancies are.
