TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir revealed that FIFA will conduct a feasibility test at Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) ahead of the U-17 World Cup 2023.
"First, FIFA will check which stadiums are standardized. Second, we will also check the feasibility before FIFA arrives," Erick Thohir stated on Monday, July 3, 2023.
On June 23, 2023, FIFA officially appointed Indonesia to host the U-17 World Cup participated by 24 countries. The event was initially to be hosted in Peru in 2021. However, the Covid-19 pandemic and the earthquake in Peru halted that plan.
Previously, President Joko Widodo urged PSSI President Erick Thohir to consider other stadiums to host the U-17 World Cup. According to Jokowi, the government along with PSSI will seek solutions considering the event will be held on November 10 through December 2 of 2023.
The U-17 World Cup will also overlap with the arrival of Coldplay, which is scheduled to hold a concert in the Main Stadium Gelora Bung Karno on November 15, 2023. "We are currently waiting for the FIFA team to arrive," Erick stated.
Erick also pointed out that there will be no renovations towards JIS until FIFA conducts their feasibility test. According to Erick, the government plans to renovate 22 stadiums. "We'll see about the renovations. We are going to wait for the results and see which ones are feasible first," he said.
However, the Indonesian Minister of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) Basuki Jadimuljono relayed that the ministry plans to renovate 22 stadiums, excluding JIS. "Tomorrow morning we will conduct a meeting in my office with the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (Erick Thohir) and the acting governor (of Jakarta) to evaluate, however we have not been appointed to renovate JIS," Basuki stated.
