Prepare for Commodity Price Hike ahead of Eid, Says BPS

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy for distribution and service statistics at Statistics Indonesia (BPS) Pudji Ismartini has appealed to the community to be prepared for the potential for an increase in commodity prices ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri.

"We should be concerned about the potential for rising prices of some products, which may be affected by the (public’s) high demand ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holidays," she said at a press conference on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in March 2023 here on Monday.

According to the BPS’ data, in previous years, the goods and services that have usually experienced an increase in prices ahead of the Islamic holy day are beef, broiler meat, shallots, broiler eggs, and flight services, she noted.

The Eid al-Fitr 1444 Hijri is estimated to fall on April 22, 2023.

The deputy stated that during the previous celebration of the holy day in May 2022, the rising prices of air transportation contributed 0.07 percent to monthly inflation.

In addition, the increasing prices of broiler chicken eggs contributed 0.05 percent to inflation in May 2022; fresh fish and shallots, 0.04 percent each; and rice with side dishes and beef, 0.01 percent each.

A similar situation was also observed during the Eid al-Fitr celebration in May 2021, when flight rates, broiler meat, and fresh fish contributed the most to inflation, namely 0.04 percent each. Meanwhile, oranges, cooking oil, and beef contributed 0.02 percent each.

Ismartini noted that the increase in air transport fares usually occurs due to the huge number of people undertaking homecoming travel ahead of the holy day.

"The increase in prices of beef, broiler chicken, and broiler eggs is also usually caused by high (community) consumption; for instance, eggs are usually used to make Eid cakes," she added.

She further informed that inflation in March 2023 reached 0.18 percent compared to February 2023 or month-to-month (mtm), as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose from 114.16 to 114.36.

Furthermore, inflation in March 2023 was recorded at 4.97 percent year-on-year (yoy), she said.
