BPS: All Cities Post Inflation in March 2023

TEMPO.CO, JakartaStatistics Indonesia (BPS) reported that all 90 consumer-price-index (IHK) cities posted inflation in March 2023 on an annual basis or year on year (yoy). Pudji Ismartini, Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, said that 60 cities experienced inflation higher than national inflation yoy.

“The highest inflation occurred in Tual, Maluku, which is 7.49 percent,” said Pudji in a virtual press conference on Monday, April 3.

Groups contributing to inflation in Tual were air transportation, gasoline (fuel prices), fresh fish, rice with side dishes, clove cigarettes, rice, and rental houses. Air transportation was recorded as contributing the most to the inflation rate at 1.80 percent, followed by gasoline and fresh fish at 0.62 percent, rice with side dishes at 0.55 percent, clove cigarettes at 0.45 percent, and rice at 0.40 percent, and rental houses at 0.22 percent.

The second-highest inflation was detected in Kotabaru, Kalimantan, at 7.40 percent yoy, followed by Kotamobagu, Sulawesi at 6.95 percent yoy, Kupang at 6.84 percent yoy, Tanjung Pandan of Sumatra at 6.71 percent yoy, and Jember at 6.48 percent yoy.

Meanwhile, 26 cities experienced inflation that was lower than the national inflation rate. The lowest inflation was reported in Merauke at 3.17 percent.

As previously reported, inflation in March 2023 rose to 4.97 percent yoy. The biggest contributor was food and beverage, as well as tobacco groups. On a monthly basis or month to month, the inflation amounted to 0.18 percent.

The inflation rate for March 2023 was higher than the previous inflation in February 2023, which was 0.16 percent. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded a surge from 114.16 in February 2023 to 114.36 in March 2023.
