President Jokowi Asserts Vision to Host Formula 1 in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in the latest Youtube video issued by the Presidential Secretariate’s Office talked about Indonesia’s intention to attract influential motorsport championships such as Formula 1.
Talks about ”sports tourism” continues to be an aspect the country aims to develop, especially after signing deals to host international races for the World Superbike, MotoGP, and the latest that was held at the iconic Lake Toba, F1 Powerboat championships.
“Yes, we are exploring such deals. Because bringing in powerful brands like the F1 Powerboat is not easy. We look forward to attracting Formula 1 to Indonesia. Maybe next year,” said the President in the video.
Jokowi commented on this after attending the F1 Powerboat race at North Sumatra’s Lake Toba on February 26.
“We had just formed a team towards that vision [of Formula 1 in Indonesia],” he exclaimed.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) chairperson, Bambang Soesatyo, previously said that his organization is lobbying to present Formula 1 in the country. In preparation, the government plans to construct a Formula 1 circuit in Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK), North Jakarta, and Bintan, Kepalauan Riau. Indonesia, which he said is likely to host F1 in 2025.
