North Jakarta Sub-districts Prepare for Tidal Floods Caused by Super New Moon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nine sub-districts or kelurahan (urban villages) in North Jakarta are on alert for possible high-tide floods, after the water gate monitoring post of Pasar Ikan in Penjaringan found that the sea level reached 220 centimeters (cm) as of 07:00 this morning, 18 January. The nine kelurahan are are Kamal Muara, Kapuk Muara, Penjaringan, Pluit, Ancol, Kamal, Marunda, Cilincing and Kalibaru.

The sub-districts' alert level was raised from raised following the alerting levels of rising tides. According to the BMKG's forecast on January 16, this coincide with the Super New Moon occurrence, which is when the Moon is near perigee or its closest point to Earth, which will be on January 21.

Plus, the weather forecast for the coast of Jakarta is light rain, with a maximum high tide of 1.1 meters expected to occur at 07:00.

The BPBD Jakarta also issued a warning for moderate-to-heavy intensity rain, lightning and strong winds in the Penjaringan area, North Jakarta between 03:10 and 05:00.

BPBD said also ask neighborhood chiefs to remind residents that during emergencies they are urged to call 112, the call center for Jakarta Siaga.
