Jokowi Comments on 'Equality Before the Law' Following Lukas Enembe's Arrest

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo commented about the arrest of Papua Governor Lukas Enembe earlier today. According to the Jokowi, the arrest of the suspect of gratification and bribe shows that each and every person in Indonesia is equal before the law.
The President conveyed his belief that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has strong evidence to commence the arrest.
"Yes, everyone is equal before the law. It is a law enforcement process that must be respected," said Jokowi at the JIExpo area in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
Lukas Enembe Directly Flown to Jakarta
Papua Police Chief Insp. General Mathius Fakhiri said Lukas Enembe was immediately flown using chartered aircraft from Papua to Jakarta after the arrest.
“Lukas has been taken to the airport and is being flown to Jakarta today,” said general Mathius to Tempo on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
He also confirmed that the arrest of the governor sparked resistance from his loyal supporters who staged a protest in front of the Papua police’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Bareskrim) headquarters. The masses then started to throw the police headquarters with various objects as the governor was being flown to Jakarta.
Mathius assured that two of the protestors who provoked the riot were apprehended and the situation improved after police shot tear gas toward the group. “We secured two people. They have been detained,” he explained. “Those two started [the riot] and there were some who followed. Police shot tear gas and dispersed the crowd."
Governor Lukas Enembe was named a suspect in an alleged corruption case in Papua. He is also being investigated by the Financial Transactions Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) for a number of suspicious transactions wired to his personal bank account and a number of his family members.
