TEMPO.CO, Banten - Dozens of trucks carrying goods and motorcycles were seen flocking Merak Seaport to cross to the Port of Bakauheni, Lampung, on Thursday or D-3 (day-three) before 2022 Christmas from early morning.
The trucks carry a variety of goods, ranging from basic necessities (Sembako) to construction materials, and motorcycles. Based on observation at 06:30 at Merak Seaport, dozens of trucks were seen lining up at Pier I to board the Caitlyn Ship.
The trucks are heading for Lampung, Palembang, Jambi, and Pekanbaru. When met at Merak Seaport, Supriyanto, one of the truck drivers bound for Palembang, said he was relieved because the traffic was running smoothly. "And there are no traffic jams," he said when met on Thursday, December 22, 2022.
The crossing on Merak Seaport is still dominated by trucks and there has not been an increase in pedestrians or passengers on vehicles going on Christmas and New Year holidays to the island of Sumatra.
The current condition of Merak Seaport is relatively normal, still packed with trucks and there has not been a surge in private vehicles. "It's best to start crossing three days before Christmas because there certainly won't be any traffic jams," he said.
Another truck driver, Haryadi, said that when he arrived at Merak Seaport, he was immediately boarded to cross to Bakauheni Port. He didn't have to stand in long lines.
Moreover, since departing at noon from Tasikmalaya, West Java, trucks carrying motorbikes have been driving smoothly up to the Jakarta-Merak Toll Road. "If you cross during day 1 before Christmas, there will be traffic jams," said the man who said he was going to Pekanbaru.
Officials from the Ministry of Transportation, Asep, stated that the flow of vehicles at Merak Seaport is currently normal and there has not been an increase. Vehicles that cross to Bakauheni Port are still dominated by trucks because there has been no prohibition from the Ministry of Transportation.
He estimates that the peak of vehicle traffic at Merak Port will occur one day before Christmas or D-1 Christmas. This is based on the experience of previous years.
