Armed Criminal Group Attacks Security Convoy in Papua

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A civilian was reportedly killed when an armed criminal group led by a figure known as Plato Marini attacked a police patrol in Papua's North Yapen District. 

Yapen Police chief, Sr. Commissioner Herzoni Saragih, confirmed that the incident took place on February 13, when the police members were heading to a village in the region. They were suddenly shot at before arriving at the destination. The shots came from the hills surrounding the path the police were traveling on, he said. 

Police vehicles were also blocked by the armed group with a log that hampered their mobility. 

As personnel attempted to cut the log, shots were again fired by the armed group which unfortunately killed a civilian identified as Yeferdon Sayuri. In addition, police claim the armed criminal group burned four operational vehicles from the Yapen Islands police resort. 

Police are still unable to confirm how many armed criminals were involved but said that there were 10 armed people who were visible during the attack. 

Local residents are urged to avoid the region and suggested to travel by sea to the North Yapen District of Papua.
