TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko Widodo, or Jokowi, openly said that he intends to see the Papua Province to be known as a province known for its sports. The President said this as he launched the Papua Football Academy at the Lukas Enembe Stadium located in Jayapura on August 31.
“The already available sports facilities after Papua hosted the National Games (PON) must be maintained. These facilities are world standard and must be utilized, being productive is a must,” said the President in a statement aired by the Presidential Secretariate office on Wednesday.
Jokowi believes there are a plethora of talented athletes in Papua. Apart from football, he also said that there are athletic and rowing talents in Papua and because of this he intends to see youth athletes be developed early.
"So it's only natural that we say Papua is a sports province," he said.
The Papua Football Academy is expected to produce soccer athletes for the future goal of entering the U-14 National Team up to the world elite level. Jokowi also acknowledged that the construction of the stadium is linked to the commitment shown by Freeport Indonesia president director Tony Wenas.
