TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The University of Indonesia Students Executive Board (BEM UI) is set to hold a demonstration rejecting the latest penal code law draft bill (RKUHP) in front of the House of Representatives (DPR) building. The police will deploy personnel for security.
“We will deploy personnel as needed for potential crowds. We are still making the security plan,” said Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Komarudin in his statement on Monday, June 27, 2022.
According to him, several elements that will join the students' protest other than BEM UI include students from UNJ and UKI. “The estimated mass is around 500-1,000 people. The demonstration point is at the DPR, they’ll come at 11:00,” Komarudin explained.
Based on the invitation to the rally received by Tempo, BEM UI and civil society groups asked President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and the DPR to publish the latest draft of the draft bill, provide space for full participation, and remove problematic articles in the draft bill.
If the demands are not met within 7 x 24 hours starting from June 21, 2022, students will return to the streets.
“We are ready to pour out, take to the streets to pick up the DPR speaker from Senayan, and ask President Jokowi to give a firm statement,” the invitation reads.
The students' demonstration by BEM UI and other elements against the problematic articles in the penal code law draft bill will be held today, June 28, 2022, at 13:00 in front of the DPR building.
