TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government, in commemorating the 495th anniversary of the city, launched the conscious living program spearheaded by P&G Indonesia and Octopus at The Terrace Senayan in Central Jakarta. Jakarta Deputy Ahmad Riza Patria expressed his gratitude for the program’s launch, which focuses on plastic waste recycling.
He believes the problem regarding plastic waste must be faced by each and every stakeholder. “We want our neighborhood clean, beautiful, and presentable. Jakarta’s daily waste reaches 7,500 tons. We have the Bantar Gebang integrated waste treatment area and we are building three ITFs,” said the Deputy in a statement on June 21.
He cited data from Statistics Indonesia which revealed that the capital city’s major source of waste or 37.33 percent comes from household waste, which brings with it plastics that are difficult to treat properly. Patria also lauded P&G’s commitment to the city’s environment.
P&G president-director LV Vaidyanathan explains that the program initially started in Bandung, West Java before the company expanded it to Jakarta with the hopes of creating bigger positive effects. In the program, he said, P&G invited 30 thousand people in Jakarta to participate in preserving the environment.
"We believe that sustainability is very important. We started this program last year in Bandung," he said.
P&G together with Octopus will involve various parties through the DKI Jakarta Environmental Service in sorting and managing plastic waste. One of the most important efforts is to encourage the community to be active in waste care programs.
"Housewives, online ojek drivers, and people with disabilities will be involved that can be their additional source of income," said Vaidyanathan.
Citing data from the Environment and Forestry Ministry (KLHK), the total national waste in 2021 reached 68.5 million tons, which of that amount, 17 percent, or about 11.6 million tons, is dominated by plastic waste. Jakarta is ranked as the third waste contributor by contributing 2.59 million tons of waste.
