TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) Secretary-General Muhammad Fadil Imran said 247 of the world's best shuttlers from 32 countries will participate in the 2022 Indonesia Open.

The committee confirmed that the prestigious tournament slated to be held on June 14-19 at Istora Senayan Jakarta could be attended by spectators under health protocols.

“We must be grateful that the Indonesia Open can be held again in Jakarta. The previous tournament (2021) was held in Bali under a bubble system, and now it returns to Istora. Hopefully, it will be more lively with the presence of the audience,” said Fadil at a press conference in Jakarta, Wednesday.

After being suspended for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he opined that the BWF Super 1000 tournament in Indonesia is a special joy for the badminton world, both nationally and globally.

Fadil ensured that all badminton players of the Merah Putih squad are ready to compete.

He added that as the COVID-19 trend in Indonesia, especially Jakarta, started to decline, all people attending Istora will still be required to comply with the applicable rules and health protocols.

“We have also received permission from the BNPB (National Disaster Mitigation Agency) and the provincial government to hold this event,” Fadil explained,

The PBSI Sec-Gen said he was optimistic about maintaining safe tournaments and applying the health protocols during the 2022 Indonesia Open given that Istora Senayan has a maximum capacity of 7,000 spectators.
