TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) warned of the potential for tidal flooding in four coastal areas of Jakarta from May 15-19, 2022. They are Pademangan, Penjaringan, Sunda Kelapa Harbor in North Jakarta, and the Thousand Islands.
“Residents of the four coastal areas are asked to be vigilant during this period,” said Jakarta BPBD spokesman Moh Insaf in a written statement, Monday, May 16, 2022.
He explained that the rob could potentially occur due to the increase in sea level during the full moon phase. The water level was predicted to rise at 21:00-24:00 local time.
The agency encouraged people residing around the coastal areas to prepare anticipatory measures by monitoring the early warnings of tidal waves and reading disaster preparedness guidebooks.
The agency would also continue to monitor the water level at floodgates issued by the Jakarta Water Resources Agency and the prediction of potential floods from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
BMKG and Jakarta Water Resources Agency will publish information related to potential floods via their social media accounts and Whatsapp messages to sub-district heads, village heads, and others, in a bid to accelerate the distribution of flood alerts to the public.
“So people living in [flood-prone] areas can be aware of and be prepared early when there is a potential disaster so that it will reduce disaster risk,” Insaf said.
