TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe National Police sent a traffic accident analysis or TAA team to investigate the cause of the deadly accident in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. The team was tasked to process the site of the tragedy.

“The Police Headquarters will dispatch the TAA team to the location,” said the National Police Public Relations Department Head Insp. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo in a written statement, Friday, January 21.

Dedi said the team would determine the main cause of the accident that killed five people. According to him, it has been known thus far that the accident occurred due to a brake failure. “But it will be investigated scientifically later,” he added.

A series of accidents occurred in Balikpapan as a truck that allegedly encountered a brake failure hit dozens of vehicles stopping at a red light. The incident killed five people and injured four motorists.

The deadly accident occurred at 6:15 Central Indonesia Time (WITA), Friday, January 21, and went viral on social media. The circulating CCTV footage showed that seven cars were rammed by a truck.

The police evacuated victims and coordinated with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) and related agencies to evacuate vehicles, examine the scene, and collect data on victims at hospital.
