Earthquake Damages Rangkasbitung Prison, 50 Inmates Relocated

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Class III Rangkasbitung Correctional Institution was forced to evacuate 50 inmates due to the damages caused by the magnitude 6.7 earthquake in Banten on Friday, January 14.
Head of Banten Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Tejo Harwanto, said it must be done for the safety of the prisoners.
"We emptied 5 rooms and evacuated 50 inmates on Friday night," Rika said on Saturday, January 15. Twenty-five people were moved to Pandeglang Penitentiary and the other 25 to Serang Penitentiary.
Of all the penitentiaries in Banten region, only Rangkasbitung Correctional Institution was affected by the earthquake centered in the southwest of Sumur, Banten. But the damages of the building were categorized as mild to medium damage.
The relocation of the inmates was done at 21:00 on Friday. The process went safely and orderly by implementing the health protocol.
The head of the Class III Rangkasbitung Correctional Institution, Budi Ruswanto, explained that his side did the first response to the Banten earthquake which resulted in the cracking of several buildings in the prison.
