BPS Releases Unemployment Data; Riau Islands Has Highest Jobless Rate

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) released this year open unemployment data. Riau Islands is the province with the highest rate of unemployed people in its population.

The data also revealed that the number of unemployed in various regions has increased from 2020 to 2021.

Riau 9.91 percent of its population as being unemployed as of November 2021. Despite the high rate, Riau's unemployment population was actually decreased from 2020's 10.34 percent.

In second place is West Java with 9.82 percent, followed by Banten with 8.98 percent in 2021.

A significant decline in open unemployment rate per province is recorded by Jakarta, which is in fourth place. In 2020, the unemployment rate was 10.95 percent. This year it dropped to 8.5 percent.

Quoted from BPS website, here are the eight provinces with the highest rate of open unemployment in 2021 as of the month of November. 

  1. Riau Islands: 9.91 percent
  2. West Java: 9.82 percent
  3. Banten: 8.98 percent
  4. Jakarta: 8.5 percent
  5. North Sulawesi: 7.06 percent
  6. Maluku: 6.93 percent
  7. East Kalimantan: 6.83 percent
  8. West Sumatra: 6.52 percent
