TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Transportation Ministry spokesperson Adita Irawati revealed on Friday, October 22, 2021, why air travel is subject to strict health requirements compared to other means of transportation. Irawati said that it is because air travel traffic has seen significant growth compared to others.
"The growth in air transport is directly proportional to growing public activities such as tourism, trade, offices, and more," said Adita to Tempo on Friday, October 22.
Based on the ministry's records, the weekly rise of air travelers amounted to 6 to 10 percent while travelers of sea and land transportation dropped.
Aligning with the growing trend in the air travel industry, the government in its latest regulation increased seating capacity from 70 percent to 100 percent. However, air carriers are required to leave three rows of seats empty to separate any passengers showing symptoms of Covid-19.
Another health requirement following the maximum seating rule is the mandatory PCR test for anyone planning to travel by plane, which applies to domestic flights in Java and Bali. Regions outside of the two islands are required to carry antigen test results prior to boarding a commercial airplane.
