4.8 M Earthquake in Bali Damages 269 Houses, Kills 3

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that 269 houses in Karangasem and Bangli of Bali were heavily damaged after the 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the province last Saturday, October 16. Three residents in the two regencies reportedly died.

Four sub-districts of Karangasem Regency affected by the quake were Ban and Dukuh Village in Kubu sub-district, Rendang and Pempatan in Rendang sub-district, Jungutan in Bebandem sub-district, and Amerta Buana in Selat sub-district.

Karangasem BPBD recorded that 243 houses were heavily damaged, 300 houses were slightly damaged, and three houses were moderately damaged. Other than damages in residential areas, the quake also destroyed 21 sacred buildings, including six paseh and two temples. One unit of the educational institution was also damaged and three road access were blocked due to landslides.

“One resident in the sub-district died, six were seriously injured, and 69 others suffered minor injuries,” said BNPB acting spokesman Abdul Muhari in a written statement quoted on Monday, October 18.

The quake that hit the province in the early hours of Saturday at 3:18 a.m. also affected Bangli Regency. The BPBD recorded that 26 houses were heavily damaged, nine houses were moderately damaged, and two houses were slightly damaged. Public facilities were also damaged, viz. one office building, one community health center (Puskesmas), one BUMDes building, two houses of worship, two public kitchens, and two public toilets.

“Two residents died, two suffered severe injuries and five were lightly injured. BPBD informed that five families of 19 people were displaced due to the earthquake,” Abdul explained, adding that the incident affected three villages in Kintamani sub-district, namely Trunyan, Abang Batu Dinding, and Abang Songan.
