TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jember Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), Jakarta Animal Aid Nation, and the Jember Local Government in a wildlife reintroduction program released 40 long-tailed macaque monkeys and four python snakes on Nusa Barong Island in Jember, East Java.
The protected wildlife were collected from Jakarta through confiscations and voluntary handovers.
Prior to the reintroduction, the wildlife underwent a series of quarantine processes that lasted for two years to ensure that they would survive in the wild again.
“The lengthy process is to make sure the released animals will survive in the wild to rejoin their colony,” said Region III Jember BKSDA chief Wiwied Widodo to Antaranews.
The reintroduction ceremony was attended by Jember Regent Hendy Siswanto and Deputy Regent M. Balya Firjaun Barlaman.
“It is our pleasure to reintroduce the wildlife,” said Hendy. “[We] are required to collectively protect the environment, including the wildlife in it.”
