Police Probe Possible Case of Neglect in Tangerang Prison Fire Incident

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A team from the Jakarta Metro Police is investigating the possibilities of negligence in the fire incident at Tangerang Prison. The fire on Wednesday, September 8, killed 44 people.
The Metro Police's director of general criminal investigation, Sr. Comr. Tubagus Ade Hidayat, confirmed the investigation in Jakarta, Thursday, 9 September.
However, Tubagus was not willing to provide further details on the investigation. "We will announce it later," he said.
Previously, the Jakarta Police's PR chief, Sr. Comr. Yusri Yunus, said that the police are questioning 22 eyewitnesses. They are prison officers who were on duty that night, surviving inmates, and the companion of the prisoners.
The fire at Tangerang Prison broke at the early hours of September 8 at Block C2, which houses 122 inmates. The incident have killed 44 inmates.
Many are calling for thorough investigation over the incident, including the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform or ICJR. They also asked the government to immediately determine the steps to take responsibility over the loss of life and casualties, including recovery and accountability to the families of the victims.
