TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's badminton women's double players Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu (Greysia / Apriyani) made their way to the Tokyo Olympics final after defeating South Korea's couple Lee So-hee and Shin Seung-chan at the semifinal in Musashino Forest Sport Plaza, Japan, on Saturday, July 31. This was the best achievement for Indonesia's women's double at the Olympics in the past 29 years.
They managed to reach the achievement at Tokyo 2020 Olympics through hardships. At the elimination round group, they only lost one game when Greysia / Apriyani finally defeated Yuki Fukushima / Sayaka Hirota at the rubber game with scores 22-24, 21-13, and 8-21.
Greysia / Apriyani, who are at the seventh position, also had to battle with a higher rank couple at the quarter final. But they managed to beat down China's pair Du Yue / Li Yin Hui, who ranked sixth, by winning three games with 21-15, 20-22, and 21-17.
The South Korea's pair Lee So-hee/ Shin Seung-chan, who Greysia / Apriyani defeated at the semifinal, was also in a higher rank. They are South Korea's best pair ranked fourth in the world.
Greysia / Apriyani possibly will have to face opponents with higher rank at the Tokyo Oympics final. China's Chen Qing Chen / Jia Yi Fan pair is at the world's second position, while South Korea's Kim Soyeong / Kong Heeyong couple is at the fifth rank.
