Indonesia Arena Fails to Host Indonesia Open 2024 due to Inadequate Building Structure

TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe BWF Super 1000 Indonesia Open 2024 badminton tournament will not be held at the Indonesia Arena. The chairman of the tournament organizing committee, Armand Darmadji, said that the reason for the cancellation is due to the inadequate building structure of the arena.

"I would like to inform the media and badminton lovers that unfortunately the Indonesia Open 2024 tournament cannot be held at the Indonesia Arena," he said in a press conference at the Hotel Mulia in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 2.

According to him, after several meetings, the organizer received a letter from PPKGBK saying that they could not hold the tournament there because the building structure could not sustain the lamp ridges.

"We can't force to install it because it's too risky there," Armand said.

Armand said he did not understand how a venue as grand as the Indonesia Arena is incapable of supporting lights installations that weigh only six tons. This should not be a problem as the weight is still within reasonable limits, considering that the PBSI held a tournament in a ballroom with a supporting structure.

Given the situation, Armand said that the PPKGBK plans to make some renovations so that the Indonesia Arena can be used as a venue for the Indonesia Open in the future. He estimates that the event will not be held there until at least next year at the soonest.
