FIFA Delays Decision on Paletine's Bid to Suspend Israel from International Football

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The international football organization FIFA has delayed its decision on a proposal made by Palestine to suspend Israel from international football membership until after the 2024 Paris Olympics. FIFA said both parties had requested more time to present their positions on the issue.
The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) submitted a proposal to suspend Israel last May over the ongoing military operation in Gaza. In response, FIFA ordered an urgent legal evaluation and promised to address the proposal at an extraordinary council meeting in July 2024.
The football governing body said on Thursday, July 18, 2024, that the legal assessment would be shared with its council by August 31, 2024.
"Following requests for extensions from both parties to submit their respective positions, duly granted by FIFA, more time is needed to conclude this process with due care and completeness,” FIFA said on its X account.
The 2024 Paris Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The men's football tournament group matches will start on July 24, 2024.
Israel is qualified for the men’s tournament and will play against Mali, Paraguay, and Japan in the group phase.
FIFA is under pressure to ban Israel for violating several of its statutes related to human rights and humanitarian objectives. Israeli siege and bombardment on Palestine’s Gaza Strip has killed over 38,000 people, with some estimating a higher toll.
Israel has been brought to the International Court of Justice by South Africa, accused of committing genocide in the enclave which the former vehemently denied.
