2024 Paris Olympic: Judo Athlete Maryam March Maharani Appointed as Indonesia's Flag Bearer

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian judo athlete, Maryam March Maharani, was chosen as the Red and White flag bearer at the 2024 Paris Olympic opening ceremony. The ceremony will be held on the banks of the Seine River on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Maharani's appointment as Indonesian flag bearer is both a symbol of national pride and a reflection of a national judo’s revival after more than a decade of absence at the Olympics since 2012. 

The judo athlete's appointment as flag bearer was also based on her resilience as an athlete. "Rani's choice was not without reason," said the Chairperson of the National Olympic Committee of Indonesia (NOC), Raja Sapta Oktohari, in Paris, France, on Tuesday local time, July 23, 2024.

"Rani is a determined woman who’s back on stage after Indonesia’s quite long absence at the judo Olympic,” said Oktohari.

Maharani expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and hoped to make Indonesia proud by clinching medals. "I am very grateful to have the opportunity to be a flag bearer, hopefully, I can continue to make Indonesia proud and give the best results. I hope to be a good and inspiring example," said Maharani.

Raja Sapta Oktohari asked for support and prayers for the athletes who will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympic. "Support and prayers from all citizens of Indonesia are very much needed to help us knock on heaven's door to bestow the athletes with strength and health," he said.
