TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - North Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Guruh Arif Darmawan firmly announced in a morning assembly attended by 435 police personnel that firearm permits were banned from being given to drunkards and police members who had anger issues.
He added that proposals for the use of firearm permits by police members should abide by procedures.
The firearms of the hundreds of police personnel present in the morning assembly were checked and those with expired permits had their guns handed to the police headquarters' logistics department.
The statement was made following the incident of a police member who shot three people in a café in West Jakarta. One of the victims was a soldier while the other two were civilians.
“Proposals for firearm permits must strictly follow existing procedures,” he said at the North Jakarta Police Headquarters on March 8. “[A background check must be done] on someone’s daily life and psychological state. They must not be drunks and not short-tempered.”
He hoped that similar incidents would not recur in the future.
