TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin said the `Brotherhood Tunnel` connecting the Istiqlal Grand Mosque and the Cathedral Church in Jakarta is a symbol of tolerance and diversity as it will represent good relations between religious believers, especially Islam and Catholics in Indonesia.
“This brotherhood tunnel will become a symbol of tolerance and diversity in Indonesia and will serve as a good example for other mosques in the capital and other areas, even at regional and global levels,” said Ma'ruf at the virtual 43rd Anniversary of the Istiqlal Mosque here on Monday night, February 22.
He further expressed appreciation for the initiative. “I hope Istiqlal Mosque continues its role and contribution as a state mosque in presenting a role model for other mosques in spreading peace, maintaining harmony and unity, and being consistent in the preaching of moderate Islam (wasathiyah).”.
According to him, the mosque has carried out its function well, both in the traditional and in the social and political sectors throughout the journey of the nation.
Ma'ruf Amin said that it is now the time for the largest mosque in Southeast Asia to develop as a center for the movement of Islamic civilization and culture in the country.
