11 Killed in Sumatra Coal Mining Disaster

22 October 2020 19:01 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) on Thursday, October 22, announced that the landslide at a traditional coal-mining site in South Sumatra’s Muara Enim regency had killed 11 workers. The 20-meter mine pit walls collapsed and buried the workers.

“The victims had been evacuated, identified, and the bodies have been handed to their respective families,” wrote the BNPB spokesperson Raditya Jati in a written statement on Thursday, October 22.

According to the BNPB, the landslide was mainly caused by high-intensity rainfall over the region which eventually destabilized the ground structure in the vicinity of the mine pit.

Heavy rain had been showering Tanjung Lalang Village since Wednesday evening.

The coal miners who lost their lives were Darwis (46); Hardiyawan; Rukasih; Sandra (25; Joko (26); Purwadi (60); Sulfiawan (30); Sumarlin (35); Hupron; Komardani (48); and Labisun (40).
