TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Face masks have now become a mandatory outfit in a bid to prevent new coronavirus transmission. As wearing it is vital to maintain public health and safety, this may cause breakouts or acne, which many call it “maskne”.
A dermatologist Caren Campbell said masks may irritate the skin and flare acne due to many factors depending on the person. “[Maskne can be] caused by the friction and occlusion to the skin from the mask,” said Campbell as quoted from Cnet on Monday, August 17.
Campbell shares three simple skincare tips to prevent maskne, as follows:
- Keep masks clean
Campbell recommends regularly cleaning the masks or changing it with a new one every day. “Make sure you are using one that is 100% cotton and that you are cleaning your mask daily,” she said.
- Skip the makeup
It is time to take a break from wearing makeup while actively treating the skin. Campbell suggests people refrain from wearing makeup and other pore-clogging or harsh products.
“Besides regularly cleansing your skin, especially right after wearing a mask, you can try using an exfoliating cleanser,” she added.
- Wear masks made of the best material for your skin
Some fibers may be too rough on the skin and cause irritation. “Switch to something smoother like neoprene (fiber),” Campbell said.
Cotton fabric is also recommended material for face masks for people in hot climates as it provides better protection and breathability than polyester or nylon.
