Istiqlal Mosque Confirms No Eid Al-Fitr Prayers This Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Istiqlal Mosque, Central Jakarta, will not hold the Eid al-Fitr Prayers this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"It is almost certain that there will be no Eid Al-Fitr Prayers this year at Istiqlal," said the Istiqlal Mosque Chief of Public Relations and Protocol, Abu Hurairah Abdul Salam, on Tuesday, May 18, 2020.
Previously, Minister of Religious Affairs Fachrul Razi had appealed to the public to carry out Eid al-Fitr prayers at home, geared to limit gatherings during the COVID-19 outbreak.
"I urge Muslims to perform Eid Al-Fitr prayers at home only with the immediate family. This is part of our empathy and commitment as religious people in handling the COVID-19 (pandemic)," Fachrul said in a written statement, on Wednesday, May 13, 2020.
Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, Muhadjir Effendy, also revealed that the government is currently preparing strict rules regarding Eid prayers.
“Regarding Eid al-Fitr Prayer, strict rules are also being prepared," Muhadjir said through a written statement quoted by Tempo on Sunday, May 17, 2020.
