TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) Commission II and the government agreed to postpone the implementation of the 2020 regional head election (Pilkada) to December due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“The DPR Commission II approves the government’s recommendation to delay the 2020 simultaneous regional head elections to December 9,” as noted in the meeting conclusion of the DPR and the government on Tuesday, April 14.
The decision was made by Commission II during a joint meeting with the Home Affairs Minister, the General Election Commission (KPU), the Election Supervisory Board (Bawaslu), and the Honorary Council of Election Committee (DKPP).
The DPR Commission II, Home Affairs Minister, and KPU planned to hold a meeting after the emergency period of the pandemic ends to discuss the latest situation and the preparation of the next steps of Pilkada 2020.
Referring to the Constitutional Court’s ruling No. 55/PUU-XVII/2019 and the evaluation of the 2019 simultaneous election, Commission II requested the government that the implementation of the elections is adjusted to the term of office, namely in 2020, 2022, 2023, 2025 and so on, which will later be included in the amendment of Article 201 of Law No. 10/2016 to be listed in the Perpu or regulation in lieu of law.
