TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Commission for Indonesian Children Protection (KPAI) recorded a total of 4,369 violations against children's rights throughout Indonesia last year, including domestic violations against children's rights.

"The number of violations against children's rights in 2019 fell 5.5 percent as compared to 4,885 in 2018," KPAI Chief Susanto noted in a press statement released in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The number of violations against children's rights in 2019 was based on the commission's surveillance and complaints from the public, he remarked.

In 2019, the KPAI had recorded 1,251 cases of children that came in contact with the law, 896 cases of violation against children's rights within families and alternative parenting, 653 cases of children's rights related to pornography and cybercrimes, and 344 cases of violation against children's rights related to health and narcotics, addictive substances, and psychotropic.

Moreover, the commission recorded 321 cases of violation against children's rights in connection with education, 291 cases of violation against children's rights linked to social problems and children in a state of emergency, 244 cases of human trafficking and exploitation, 193 cases of violation against children's rights related to religion and culture, 108 cases of violation against civil rights and participation, and 68 other cases.

Susanto pointed to the government’s high commitment and alignment to enhancing the quality of child protection in the country.

"This is apparent from the president's instruction to the Ministry for Women's Empowerment and Child Protection and other relevant ministries to improve the quality of child protection efforts," he added.
