Egypt Awards Quraish Shihab for Services in Elevating Islam

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Egypt has awarded the prominent Muslim scholar, M. Quraish Shihab, with the First-rate Honorary Stars in the fields of science and art. The award was presented by Egyptian Prime Minister Musthafa Madbouli in Al-Azhar’s International Conference on the Renewal of Islamic Thoughts in Cairo.
“We hope this award can motivate us to further present a moderate and tolerant Islam,” said Director of the Center of Al-Quran Studies, Muchlis M. Hanafi, in a statement from Cairo on January 27.
According to Muchlis, the award is given by the government of Egypt to domestic and international ulema and Muslim scholars with services in the field of elevating the field of Islamic thought and spreading a moderate and tolerant Islam. Quraish Shihab himself is the founder of the Center of Al-Quran Studies.
Other than Quraish Shihab, other figures who won awards on the renewal of Islamic thoughts are; the late Syeikh Muhammad Mustafa al-Maraghi, the 8th Grand Syeikh al-Azhar, late Syeikh Musthofa Abdul Raziq; the 10th Grand Syeikh Al-Azhar; and the late Syeikh Mahmoud Syaltut.
