TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Law and Human Rights Ministry’s director-general of immigration Ronny Franky Sompie said that there are no rules that prevent Rizieq Shihab from returning to his home country. They added that the Islam Defenders Front (FPI) leader can return to Indonesia any time he wants.
Rizieq Shihab departed to Saudi Arabia from Indonesia two years ago immediately after he was implicated in a criminal investigation for his involvement in an alleged pornography-case. Police have now closed the case.
“A government cannot deny the entry of its citizens; that is an international principle,” he said on Thursday, July 18.
Ronny’s statement is a response to the allegations and pressure expressed by FPI members, which accused the Indonesian authority of blocking Rizieq’s return to Indonesia. They claim that this is the driving factor of his overstay and the immigration issues currently facing him in Saudi Arabia.
The director-general of immigration assured that Rizieq’s passport is still eligible up to this day.
