Indonesians Freed of Death Penalty in Saudi Arabia

25 April 2019 17:51 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Two Indonesian migrant workers have been repatriated from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after escaping the death sentence charged against them. There are 11 more Indonesians still on death row in Saudi.

Sumartini binti M Galisung from Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, and Warnah binti Warta Niing from Karawang, West Jawa were accused of practicing witchcraft by their employers. They were given the death sentence on March 2010.

They were supposed to have been released but their employers objected and appealed. They remained on arrest until early this year.

After almost ten years of legal process, they are discharged and repatriated. Both women arrived in Jakarta on April 24.

Since 2011, 104 Indonesians have been given the death penalty by the Saudi authorities. Eighty-seven have been released, the Foreign Affair Ministry said in a press release.
