Sports Minister on Fixing Downside of Online Gaming, PUBG

26 March 2019 22:02 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister (Menpora) Imam Nahrawi talked about the possible ban imposed on the current online gaming craze, Player Unknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG).

The PUBG, which is facing a possible Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) fatwa ban, was initially discussed following the terrorist shootings at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Some blamed the PUBG game for allegedly inspiring deadliest terrorist attack in New Zealand.

Imam Nahrawi argues that any game available in the market has its positives and negatives. He also said that the government’s Esports President’s Cup always puts forth the positive aspects of electronic sports.

“I guess Pak Triawan Munaf (Head of the creative economy agency or Bekraf) must step in,” said Imam Nahrawi at the Esports President’s Cup in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 26.

Imam Nahrawi continued to defend e-sports since he said it still has plenty of room to grow and economically grow. He also said it could produce international event medals from Indonesian e-sports athletes.

“If there is a negative aspect to it, it must be fixed,” said Imam on the possible MUI ban against PUBG.
