Ministry of Trade Guarantees Staple Food Supply Nearing Ramadan

21 March 2019 09:55 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Following the Ministry of Trade's coordination meeting on the national staple food supply in Bandung, Indonesian Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita said that supplies up to April would suffice the public’s needs.

“The nine staple foods (sembako) are sufficient up to April,” said Enggartiasto after the closed meeting ended.

He maintains that economic activities in regions so far are running without any notable hindrances with high money circulations and retail sales. However, he said that the government will intervene with the market once the rise in price is detected.

“This is the problem right now, the freefalling prices of chicken eggs,” said the Minister who considered current supplies of rice, cooking oil, sugar, meats, and eggs to suffice.

A potential weather anomaly that may disrupt the supplies of sembako is also anticipated by the government, as the government has done in the past three years in the wake of any religious holidays.

The Trade Minister also announced that the ministry has launched a mobile application for regional administrators which enable its users to monitor the dynamic prices of staple food needs across the country.
