TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The national baseball team of Indonesia set a target to enter the final match in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, known as SEA Games, which will be held in the Philippines. Head of development and achievement division of the Indonesian Baseball and Softball Association (Perbasasi), Dana Kusumo, pinned hoped his team would bag a gold medal.
According to him, the national team has a high chance to bring home a medal considering only two countries in Southeast Asia competing to win the gold, namely the Philippines and Indonesia. “The Philippines is like an eternal enemy for Indonesia in this typical American sport,” said Dana in Jakarta, Wednesday, December 19.
Back in the 2017 SEA Games took place in Malaysia, sports branch baseball and softball were not contested. Since then, Dana added, baseball and softball listed in the biennial multi-sport event.
Baseball, he opined, became one of the favorite sports in the Philippines, besides basketball. “The match thus far will be men’s baseball, and men’s and women’s softball,” he added.
Dana continued to explain that Perbasasi would hold a national circuit in January 2019. The members joined in the national team would be sent to their respective regions to undergo training programs from the association. During the time, those players would compete in the pre-match of 2020 National Sports Week.
Perbasasi would gather those players afterward in the middle of 2019. “We will schedule training programs in abroad,” he noted. As for the 2019 SEA Games, the national team would possibly consist of senior and junior players.
