TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The ratio of media coverage to women as news resource persons compared to men in public policy is still far from ideal.

“Only 11 percent of women as resource persons are for the political economy news section, even though the population is 50-50,” said Tempo Institute Director Mardiyah Chamim in Jakarta, Wednesday, December 12.

This conclusion is the result of monitoring of ten media in Indonesia conducted by Tempo Institute in collaboration with the Tempo Data Analysis Center for a full month on August 6 - September 5. It was carried out to reflect the 90 years of the Indonesian Women’s Congress, which will be celebrated on December 22.

“Our position has progressed, but there are many records. Indeed, many women become resource persons for lifedata-style and entertainment, but they are interviewed as objects,” she said.

The results of this monitoring will be released in a discussion about Women and Media on Sunday, December 16, 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to enliven the celebration of 2018 Tempo Media Week, Palmerah Edition, at Tempo Building, 8th Floor, Jakarta.

In addition to Mardiyah, present as the resource person guests of the discussion are Devi Asmarani (Co-founder and Editor in Chief of Magdalene), Ratna Ariyanti (AJI and Bisnis Indonesia), Purwani Diyah Prabandari (Managing Editor of Tempo English), and Citra Dyah Prastuti (Editor in Chief of KBR).

Besides discussing, the event will invite journalists to get involved in Women in Fund.

“We want to make a fellowship for women journalists to cover women’s issues and marginalized groups,” he said. Women in Fund will be launched in January 2019.

People who are interested in participating in the Women’s and Media discussion can register at bit.ly/tempomediaweek2018
